IDA Hahndel was born on December 15, 1928, in Che?M a traditional Jewish
family.
A student of Michalowitch at the Warsaw Conservatory of Music, she won
the Gold and Hubermann awards at the Conservatory in 1933. She gave solo
concerts at the age of 12 and toured since then.During his stay in
Paris, he studied with Enescu and Fleisch, and in 1937 he made a
sensation in the music world by playing Beethoven and Brahms concertos
at a Concert with the London Symphony Orchestra.
Hahndel's early mono recordings, including 78 RPM in the late 1940s and

I have always
believed that the Sibelius violin concerto, performed by Ada Hendel, is
unsurpassed, even unequalled. The composer himself once wrote to her:
"Please accept my warmest thanks for such an excellent performance of my
violin concerto." In every respect, your treatment is the work of a
master of art wood, and I congratulate you on your great success, but
above all I congratulate myself - my concerto has found a rare and
highly qualified interpreter." Here, it is not only her exquisite skill
in the service of music, but more importantly, Miss Handel's remarkable
use of timbre - especially the icy entry of the violin in the first
movement, which evokes the bleak and vast Finnish landscape. What
interested me was that she also looked at the work from a visual
perspective: at the same time she told me that some players made it too
intense, too exciting, and used a large vibrato, while others played it

On July 2, 2020, relatives of the great
violinist announced in the media that "Ida
Haendel passed away peacefully last night at her
home in Miami..." The news.
"My beloved aunt, legendary and world-renowned
violinist IDA Handelle passed away peacefully
last night at her home in Miami..." Hahndelle's
nephew Richard Grunberg said via social media:
"I have so many great memories of her, she was a
great aunt to me, I thought of her as a second
mom..."
"My aunt was a British pride, a Canadian
citizen, a resident of the United States, a
benefactor of Israel, a distinguished global
citizen and child prodigy who left a profound
mark on the music industry. The world has lost a
musical legend who will be missed by all her
friends who knew and admired her and by her
close family who loved her dearly."
Ida Haendale (1928-2020), whose life spanned
most of the twentieth century, remains one of
the music scene's most enduring ICONS, an
inspiration to performers and music lovers alike
through her many recordings as well as her live
performances and radio broadcasts.
Ida Haendel was born on December 15, 1928 in
Chelm, Poland, the youngest of two daughters of
Nathan and Fela Hendel(sic). Some sources give
her birth as 1923 or 1924. Ms. Hahndelle claimed
that the confusion stemmed from a performance
she gave in London in 1937, when she was nine;
Before she was due to appear, her manager was
told that no actor could be younger than 14, so
he claimed that was indeed her age.
When IDA was born, her older sister Ala, later
Alice, was just six years old. Although the two
were very different physically and mentally,
they remained close friends. Her parents were
convinced that their second child would be a
boy, so they decided to name her Isaac after her
maternal grandfather, which they did even though
she was a girl, and kept IDA as her informal
name; That way, she said, "I was instilled with
an element of masculinity."
Nathan Handel is a portrait painter whose life
is very unstable, which causes his family to
fall into poverty for a time. Although the Hends
were not particularly religious, they were
traditionally Jewish, and Ada described the
celebratory dinners her mother served on Friday
nights, regardless of the family's financial
situation. In addition to becoming a gifted
artist, Nathan aspires to become a professional
violinist and pursues his thwarted ambition
through a reluctant Ala Ala. He bought Alala a
musical instrument and made her take lessons she
didn't like. Ada, however, showed an unusually
instinctive fondness for the instrument: she
described how one spring morning, as a
three-year-old at home with her mother, she
removed her sister's violin from its case and
played it for the first time. Although the piano
was too big for her, her playing surprised her
mother and onlookers.
Nathan quickly turned his attention to Ada and
took her to the Warsaw Conservatory to study
with Miecyzslaw Michalowicz, where she won a
gold medal at the conservatory in 1933 at the
age of four. Nathan then took her to Germany,
Paris and London, where she studied first with
Carl Flesch and then with George Enescu. Among
the teachers and musicians she came into contact
with were Joseph Schighetti, Nikita Margelov and
Artur Rubinstein's brother Ignace Rubinstein,
whom she met in Paris in the fall of 1933. In
1935, at the age of seven, she won the Polish
Prize at the first Viniaski Competition in
Warsaw, finishing seventh overall. First was
Ginette Neveu, 16, and second was David Ostrach,
27. Neveu remained a friend and mentor to the
young IDA Handelle until her unyoung death in
1949. The intense passion with which the Hends
pursued Ada's career reinforced what the
violinist claimed was a sense of isolation
inherent in her character. Fortunately, however,
she had a contemporary prodigy, Josef Hassid, a
child experiencing a similar lifestyle, with
whom she could relate.
In 1937, under the baton of Henry Wood, she made
her stage debut at the Queen's Hall in London,
and subsequently made regular appearances in his
Walking concerts. It was around this time that
her manager suggested she change the spelling of
her last name from "Hendel" to "Haendel," which
reminded her of the composer of the same name.
During World War II, she often performed in
National Gallery concerts organized by Lady Mira
Hess, and also spent much of her time touring,
playing for Allied troops, often in harsh
conditions; She became a British citizen in
1940.
She traveled to the United States for the first
time in 1946, toured extensively, and settled in
Montreal in 1952. In 1979, she moved to Miami,
which remains her home today. She has been a
truly international artist, performing with many
of the greatest conductors and soloists of the
20th century, although her name is particularly
associated with Sergio Celibate. In 2001, the
BBC conducted a week-long "live performance" of
her in London, drawing on archival material and
interspersed with interviews with Hahndelle
herself. Among the honors she received was the
Sibelius Prize awarded to her in 1982 for her
outstanding performance in the Sibelius Violin
Concerto, which she received praise from the
composer after hearing the broadcast. In 1991
she was appointed Commander of the British
Empire and in 2000 was awarded an honorary
doctorate by the Royal College of Music in
London. In 1970, she wrote her autobiography,
The Violin Woman.
In the first half of the 20th century, IDA
Hahndelle fulfilled her childhood promise and
has grown into a legend of the 21st century.

she mastered it, devoted so much of her existence to it,
cared so much about it. Every performance was an event,
which she took absolutely seriously, giving each concert
her all. She spoke through her violin, proved herself
through it, lived within the music she made. She was a
marvel, an icon; each note she played was the result of
total conviction – and as a consequence was totally
convincing. She had been groomed from the beginning to
be a star – and a star she was.
But she was also an adorable person. I had heard of
her, of course, from my childhood onwards – hadn’t
everybody? But I didn’t meet her until - I think - 2000,
when I attended a memorable recital she gave at the
Wigmore Hall (apparently her debut there!), concluding
with a magisterial performance of Enescu’s 3rd sonata.
I’d heard, to my delight, that she’d heard me somewhere,
and had liked it, so I dared to go backstage afterwards.
Having enthused about her playing, I rather uncertainly
told her that I was Steven. She looked at me
disbelievingly. ‘You’re NOT’ she announced, in her
wonderful deep voice. I assured her that I certainly had
been last time I looked in the mirror. She accepted
this, and proposed that we play the Brahms Double
together. It was such an honour; but alas, I just
couldn’t do the dates she suggested. |
