Columbia has a winner, a glorious musical for your holiday pleasure and for as long as it runs at the new Loew's State 1, which could be until next year's Christmas picture arrives there. Produced in England by John Woolf, "Oliver!" is a timeless classic that will be as lovable in 10 or 20 years as it is today. From Lionel Bart's popular stage production, directed for the screen by Sir Carol Reed, the picture is a shining example of the teamwork of many artists contributing to its overall-perfection. The story has the substance and purpose of Charles Dickens' everlasting original. To this have been added the beautiful, humous music by Bart - every song brought spontaneous applause - and dance numbers, brilliant, buoyant and each a joyous event. Nothing gives the film more character than the settings. A Dickensian London, designed by John Box and erected at Sheperton Studio, consists of shops of all kinds, outdoor markets, smoke-filled pubs, the waterfront, Fagin's dark, dirty den and elegant Bloomsbury, a square where orphan Oliver finds his rich uncle to live happily ever after. With discrimination, Columbia production chief Mike Frankovich, Woolf and Reed picked a cast that couldn't be improved on. Ron Moody, who originated the role on the London stage, gives a delightfully humorous performance as Fagin, a musical comedy Fagin, 'tis true, but perfect in this case, more sympathetic than horrible, singing and dancing with his little pickpockets. "Reviewing the situation," his number when thinking fleetingly of reforming, is a show stopper as he and his most loyal pupil, Artful Dodger, trip happily into the sunset. Shani Wallis, who can act, sing and dance, is a fine choice for Nancy, Bill Sikes' girl and Oliver's friend. She gives an appealing rendition of "As Long as He Needs Me" and sings and dances up a storm in her "Oom Pah-Pah" number, leaping with the grace and agility of a gazelle over tables, chairs and barrels. Miss Wallis emerges from this film as a musical star who can hold her head up with the best. |

When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Lauded for
his deeply informed and intelligent artistic leadership, Dima
Slobodeniouk has held the position of Music Director of the Orquesta
Sinfónica de Galicia since 2013, which he combines with his more recent
positions as Principal Conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and
Artistic Director of the Sibelius Festival following his appointment in
2016. Linking his native Russian roots with the cultural influence of
his later homeland Finland, he draws on the powerful musical heritage of
these two countries. Last season he gave his debut with the Het Concertgebouw Orkest, including a tour to Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Tallinn. He works with orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Radio Sinfonieorchester Berlin, ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, London Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Finnish Radio Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Chicago, Houston and Baltimore as well as Sydney Symphony Orchestras. With Lahti Symphony he is excited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sibelius Festival with soloists such as Karita Mattila.
