(Larry
(Down
Ampney)。
(Max
Bruch)
(Folk—Song
(Sancta Civitas,
(Linden Lea
(Hugh the Drover
Kiss,1936)、 《海上骑士》(Riders to teh Sea,1937)、《天路历程》(The Pilgrim's

Today in the
history of music
On May 3, 1952, Vaughan Williams' harmonica and string romance was
performed in New York, with Larry Adler as a solo."My first two
performances were terrible to say the least, because I was always a
terrible reader and I learned better with my ears."
Ralph Vaughan Williams was born on October 12, 1872, in Down Ampney,
Gloucestershire. The son of a clergyman, he studied at Carterhouse in
London and trinity college, Cambridge (ma, PhD in music).During his
studies, he spent two years, plus the last few years of his general
education, studying at the Royal Academy of music. His music teachers
were Hubert parry and Charles Stanford. He was also in Berlin, studying
with Max Bruch. In Paris in 1909, ravel was consulted several times.
In the early 1990s, he joined the folk-song Soiety, founded in 1898, and
he began to actively collect and study English Folk songs. It was a move
which would obviously free him from the dialect of his schooldays, while
at the same time not giving up any of his accumulated virtuousness, and
courageously adopting methods of expression that seemed certain to suit
his temperament.Another major influence was religious and secular music
from the Tudor period in England. In his unaccompanied mass in g minor,
he goes even beyond this, freely adopting medieval tonal and
contrapuntal methods, unhampered by emotion-processing methods, and even
ignoring the prohibition altogether.Since the fifteenth century, this
prohibition has developed, gradually standardizing the system of
European music.
His orchestra consists of nine symphonies.Among them are "London", "the
fields" and an early choral orchestra's "symphony of the sea".The first
is lively and contemplative, and the second is so vague and mysterious
that it can only be judged if it is performed in perfect proportion to
its layout. But even so, it still retains a certain distinct quality that
interests others.Structurally, his music is often closely associated
with impressionism. His fourth symphony (1953) is based on the theme of
two epigrams. His seventh symphony (1953) was produced from the
soundtrack of his own film, "Scott of the Antarctic," hence the name
"Sinfonia Antarctica. His eighth symphony (1906) and ninth symphony
(1958) were written after he was 80 years old, but they were still very
personal.
He wrote a large number of grand chorus and the band's work, they have a
broad mass character, and it is his most outstanding achievement: among
them are citizens of the divine (Sancta Civitas, 1926), "the blessing"
(Benedicite, 1930), more solemn (Magnificat, 1932), the character's Five
Tudor dynasty painting like "(Five Tudor Portraits, 19, 36), and" given
the noble peace "(Dona Nobis Pacem, 1936).
His songs (including an early song, "Linden Lea," which has become a
popular song) and his chamber music show particular sophistication. His
operas:"Hugh livestock traders" (Hugh the Drover 190 l ~ 4) fly "Sir
John in Love" (Sir John in Love, 1929), "mildew Kiss" (Thc Poisoned
Kiss, 1936), "Sea knight" (Riders to teh Sea, 1937), "the Pilgrim's
Progress" (the Pilgrim 's Progress,"(1949) and his dance dramas" Old
King Cole "(1923) and" Job "(1930 a masquerade) were mostly normalized
in the system.

"The Lark Ascending" is a famous work by The English composer
Vaughan Williams, based on a poem of The same name by The
Victorian poet George Meredith. The violin and piano version was
completed in 1914, and the more common violin and band version
was completed in 1920.
Vaughan Williams drew much inspiration from English folk songs
in his creation. In fact, he was in the early part of the
century.Tibet has collected and classified many folk songs.
The romance of the violin and the orchestra, "the lark rises"
(the orchestra consists of two flutes, an oboe, two clarinet,
two bassoon, and the triangle is very effective -- and the
strings), was written in l914, but has been set aside,
It was not revised until 1920.It was first performed on June 4,
1921.At the head of the score, the composer transcribed three
separate passages from George's poem the lark rises, which he
described as follows:
"It soared into the sky and began to circle,
A string of silvery songs fell from it,
The silver chains are joined without a break,
It squeaked and purred and warbled and quivered...
It sings till the song fills the sky,
This is the outpouring of his love for the earth,
Fly for ever, fly,
Our valley is its golden cup,
It is the wine that flows there,
When it's gone, it takes us high,
Till its silver bells are gone,
Under the sun, fantasy begins to sing. |

Vaughan Williams-Fantasia on
a Theme by Thomas Tallis-Toronto
Symphony Orchestra
|
(Vaughan
(Thomas
(Vaughan

Koerner
Hall |
"The Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a
Theme by Thomas Tallis has always been one
of my favourite pieces. I first discovered
it as a young teen at school – incidentally
the same school attended by Vaughan Williams
himself. My education there coincided with
the 100th anniversary of Vaughan Williams’
birth and also the 100th anniversary of our
school. We performed a great deal of his
music that year, and I played the violin
solos in the Tallis Fantasy. I had the
opportunity to perform as concertmaster for
this piece many times after that
celebration, and have fond memories of all
of those performances.
The juxtaposition of purity and intensity of
the Thomas Tallis melody with the rich
harmonies of Vaughan Williams are
overwhelmingly beautiful. I hope you enjoy
our performance!"
— Peter Oundjian
This performance was recorded live at
Koerner Hall in Toronto on Aug. 12, as a
part of the Toronto Summer Music Festival. |
