(Johannes Brahms)
Today in the history of music
The news of Clara schumann's death on May 20, 1896, at the age of 76 shocked her loyal friend Brahms, who rushed across Germany but was still a few hours late for her funeral in Frankfurt. When Brahms felt Bonn again, she only saw Clara's coffin sinking to her husband's grave.
Brahms was born on May 7, 1833.He lived in poverty as a child. At the age of 13, he played for a dance in a hotel and played for his father in a theater. At the same time, in order to get more money, he wrote many salon music works, including various dances, marches and orchestral arrangements.
Poverty and misfortune are often fertile soil of genius, in this bitter fertile soil, Brahms grew up.He didn't go to any school, but he met a very good music teacher, Max.Under markson's strict guidance, Brahms's piano and composition theory developed rapidly.Indeed, markson was instrumental in Brahms's rise to the ranks of the world's greatest musicians. He intended to be a member of a band, but soon showed his talent for the piano, and his parents expected him to be a child prodigy. At the age of 15, he began to live an independent life with a career in music. His piano performance gradually gained the appreciation of the listeners, and at the same time, he continued to produce more works.
Schumann's attempted suicide and subsequent insanity in 1854 left Brahms confused and disturbed, as reflected in works such as the piano concerto in d minor. His emotional excitement and annoyance were compounded by a growing attachment to Clara schumann, and after schumann's death neither of them intended to turn their friendship into a marriage, for which Brahms remained unmarried for the rest of his life.
He was quite well off materially, but deep down he was very lonely.Being single all his life left him without any family, and he had to travel constantly to seek solace in the beauty of nature. He died in Vienna on April 3, 1897.The funeral was very grand, and he was buried in the famous central cemetery of Vienna next to Beethoven, the great master of art whom he admired so much.
In 1858, Brahms served as a choral conductor in the city of dietmolde. He was exposed to choral works of different ages and styles, which laid a solid foundation for his later works of large-scale vocal music, such as mezzo-soprano rhapsody and German requiem. He settled in Vienna in the 1960s, making what was then the music center of Europe his second home.
In his later years, composers enjoyed high reputation: he was elected as an academician of the Berlin academy of arts;Being considered an "honorary citizen" of Hamburg; The king of Austria made him Leopold; He received his PhD from Cambridge university and breslau university in Germany, etc.
After the failure of the European revolution in 1848, some progressive intellectuals who had participated in the revolution came to Hamburg. Brahms met the exiled Hungarian violinist edvard leimini, from whom he was exposed to the revolutionary ideas of the time and became familiar with the rich folk music of Hungary. In 1853, at the age of 20, Brahms traveled with leomeni to many cities in Germany to perform and write his first major work, piano sonata in C major, op. 1.He met in Hanover, weimar and Dusseldorf, respectively, with Hungarian violinist joachim, composer liszt and German composer schumann.Schumann broke his long silence by writing his last essay in the new music journal, in which he enthusiastically recommended "this outstanding man" and predicted that one day he would "reveal the more magical mysteries of the spiritual world" if he wrote orchestral music.
Brahms was surrounded by European romanticism all his life, but he was recognized as the last master of German classical music.Brahms created a wide range of music, but not involved in the major musical genre is opera. The image formation and tonal basis of Brahms' works are rooted in German folk music. He attached equal importance to both classical music tradition and folk music, and his affection for folk music was especially deep. He even regarded folk songs as his ideal.
Brahms occupies a high position in the history of European music, people compare him with the father of music Bach and Beethoven, collectively known as the "three B" (the name of the three masters of music is the first letter "B").

  Clara schumann.

Brahms and Clara had a close friendship, and many of his works were dedicated to his confidant.

Brahms met schumann at the age of 20, with the help of the famous violinist joachim. At schumann's home, Brahms met schumann's wife Clara for the first time and fell in love with her at first sight.Brahms, however, kept this most sincere feeling in his heart and never revealed it to Clara until she and he died.
Did Clara not notice because Brahms had never spoken? It's impossible.Love to the depths, often language is superfluous, is also pale.Heart to heart, sometimes is the most simple simple, not to profusion of language and blooming flowers to rob the eye, that is generally only suitable for the stage lyric, is not necessary in life.Especially music itself is the language of the mind, not to mention the mouth.Surrounded and steeped in music, Clara was no child. She was 14 years older than Brahms, and someone who had experienced love knew Brahms's heart.
In 1854, schumann committed suicide in the Rhine river and was saved. Until schumann's death two years later, Brahms was at Clara's side, accompanying her to take care of schumann and their seven children, helping her out of pain and despair. To do this, he gave up many chances of fame and money.Clara knew clearly that Brahms had done more for Clara herself than for his teacher schumann.

Clara schumann.

During Brahms's life, several pieces of music were dedicated to or associated with Clara.
One is his piano sonata in C major. He came to schumann's house for the first time and played this piano piece for schumann.Schumann stopped him for a moment and asked Clara to join him.It was in this song that Clara came into the room, and it was in this song that he saw Clara, and his eyes lit up and he fell in love with her.

There is also a piece called the four most serious songs. It was composed in the words of the bible and written shortly before Clara's death in 1896.Brahms did not write any other music after this piece and may be his last.I saw the German Werner stein's "catalogue of music and dance" in the chronicle of human civilization, and in the chronicle of the year 1896, he noted that the song was "dedicated to Clara schumann."I have never heard this music before. I wonder what kind of music it is. Could it be the music dedicated to Clara at Clara's grave?Clara died soon after she finished the piece. Why did it so happen that Clara died just after Brahms had finished writing the music for her?Why did it so happen that 11 months after Clara's death, Brahms was dead again? Is there any sign that everything is in the dark?Could it be that god or love has arranged the timetable for everything, including life and death?Life and art are indeed full of many mysteries.

(Leif Segerstam)

Schumann's melodic "scenes from childhood" is a very personal work, specifically a love letter he writes to his beloved Clara vick.At the age of 18, shuman moved from his hometown of zwickau to study law at the university of leipzig. At the same time, shuman studied piano with pianist friderich vick. Vick's daughter Clara was only 9 years old.Two years later, his mother gave up trying to stop him from studying music, and schumann devoted himself to it. He stayed with his teacher, Mr. Vick, and concentrated on playing the piano. It was a pleasant time at Mr. Wake's, who regarded the young man as his own, and shuman and Clara as siblings. They played four hands on the piano, played funny music games, read books, went on outings, and schumann told her strange stories.Whenever schumann wrote a new piano sketch, Clara tried it out.The relationship between Clara and schumann changed subtly as she grew older, and the friendship turned into love. Clara was now a talented young pianist at the age of 16.Mr. Wake is aware of his daughter's feelings, can not help but fly into a rage, he forbade his daughter and schumann have any feelings other than classmates, he wants her to become a great pianist, and the game will destroy a person's great future.Vic wantonly interfere in her daughter's love and I couldn't say a reason, schumann now foolishly hurt fingers, completely impossible to become a musician, he began to write the way to the composer is clearly a very insecure occupation, how many talented composer, and even accepted master often poor all his life, Mr Breivik couldn't stay put his eye to a famous composer. The stubborn old German, desperate to break up the young couple, left leipzig with his daughter, forbidding them to meet, forbidding them to write to each other, and forbidding Clara even to play the music of schumann, by this time a composer and music critic of some note. When shuman sneaked in to meet Clara at a dresden gig, vick announced that if they ever met again he would kill shuman with a pistol. It was almost a scandal in the music industry at the time, and in Europe, which had experienced the enlightenment and cried out for the liberation of individuality, such a gross interference in young people's love would have been considered highly immoral. When vick took Clara to Paris to perform, Chopin complained about the incident. Vick's friend liszt broke up with him to protest his atrocity, and Mendelssohn in leipzig also expressed sympathy for schumann.

Letter to her daughter Elise
March 2, 1884
In this letter, Clara Schumann writes to her daughter Elise about life in London, and looks forward to the upcoming visit of Elise and another daughter, Marie. She describes the bitter cold of winter, reports suffering from an ongoing, severe toothache, and comments on the difficulties of living in a foreign country. She asks that her daughters bring with them a few “nice things” (“schöne Sachen”) for her, because she feels that everything in London is expensive. Clara provides news of her other children, including Ferdinand, Felix, and Julie, and expresses regret that she and Elise can’t be together on Elise’s birthday.
