(Oliver
(A Koussevitzky centennial
(Pinchas
(The Pittsburgh
Ivor

Today in the
history of music
On April 7, 1968, Oliver Knussen conducted his first symphony with the
London symphony orchestra, of which Nathan's father was principal bass
player.
Born in 1952, oliver knutson studied composition in London with John
lambert and Gunther schuler. He was only 15 when he wrote his first
symphony (which later premiered with the London symphony orchestra), and
his third for Michael tilson Thomas (1973-1979) is now widely regarded
as a 20th century classic.A dizzying array of productions, including
"the dance of ophelia" (A Koussevitzky centennial commission, 1975) and
"Coursing" (1979), cemented Knudsen's position at the forefront of
contemporary British music.
In the 1980s, knutson collaborated with Maurice sendak on the operas
where the wild things are (1979-83) and sigurti pigurti Pope!(1984-5,
rev. 1999).Originally produced by the Glyndebourne festival opera, the
works were widely performed in Europe and the United States and recorded
on CDS and videos.
Knutson's ebullient concert opener "fireworks" (1988) soon found its way
into the standard orchestral repertoire, as did his concerto for horn
and violin. The latter, written in 2002 for Pinchas Zukerman and The
Pittsburgh Symphony, has performed nearly 100 times worldwide under The
direction of conductors such as Barenboim, Dudamel, Eschenbach and
Salonen.Recent productions include ophelia's last dance (2010) for
piano, reflection (2016) for violin and piano, and O Hototogisu! For
soprano, flute and ensemble.Knussen's music was part of the BBC symphony
orchestra's "total immersion" festival at the barbican to celebrate his
60th birthday in 2012.
As one of the most important composers in the world, Knussen is known
for his tireless advocacy of contemporary music. He recorded numerous
works and hosted many premieres, including major works by carter, henze,
and Anderson.2009 royal philharmonic society conductor award winner, has
worked with the BBC symphony orchestra (2009-2014), music director of
the London symphony orchestra (1998-2002), contemporary music director
of tanglewood music centre (1986-93), and co-artist of Birmingham
contemporary music group. He was artistic director of the aldeburgh
festival from 1983 to 1998, and in 1992 co-founded the britten-pears
program for contemporary composition and acting with Colin Matthews.
Knussen, who lives in snape, Suffolk, was appointed CBE in 1994.In 2014,
he became Richard Rodney Bennett, the first professor of music at the
royal college of music in London.Other awards include the Ivor Novello
classical music award, the ISM award for outstanding musician and the
2015 queen's music award.

(London
(Birmingham Contemporary Music
Group)
(Mark-Anthony

Richard
Rodney

Knussen,
who received an honorary doctorate from the royal
college of music shortly before his death, was also
the Richard Rodney Bennett professor of music. No
composer was more skilled in skill and imagination,
no conductor more critical, no mentor more generous,
and no one better informed about the repertoire of
new music, the academy said in a citation. He is one
of the greatest cultural treasures of the college
and the country. |
