history of music On March 6, 1930, the brilliant American conductor Lorin Maazel was born in neuilly, a town on the western outskirts of Paris. Maazel was a talented American conductor who conducted the New York Philharmonic at the age of nine.In 1960, at the age of 30, he was hired as conductor of the baylett music festival, setting records for the festival's youngest conductor and the first American conductor.Maazel's reputation as a conductor in European orchestras has made him widely respected by his members. Most of the conductors were serious, meticulous, even demanding. So was karajan, so was toscanini, so was maazel at first, but then what transformed him into an amiable old father? One day, his five-year-old daughter suddenly said to her father, "daddy, why are you always so fierce? I'm so afraid."It occurred to maazel that he, too, was always too serious and nervous to conduct the orchestra, and he decided to change this bad habit. One day, while conducting at the Vienna opera house, it occurred to him to overcome the shortcoming of losing his temper at random with the members of the orchestra.So at home in front of the mirror to practice a variety of smiles, and in the heart silently asked himself, must keep smiling, never lose his temper. It was one of his worst practices, but maazel kept smiling.Unexpectedly, the members of the band were at a loss. Halfway through the rehearsal, the chief of the band couldn't hold back any more. In 1962, he led
the French national orchestra on a tour of the United States, and on
November 1 of that year, he made his American musical world famous by
performing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as reciting conductor
of Mozart's don giovanni.In the summer of 1963 he went to the Soviet
union to conduct concerts in Moscow and Leningrad.From 1965 to 1971,
maazel became musical director of the Berlin state opera.From 1965 to
1975 he was chief conductor of the radio symphony orchestra of west
Berlin.During this time, he also served as guest conductor throughout
Europe and the United States. From 1972 to 1982, maazel was music director and principal conductor of the Cleveland orchestra.During this period, he led the orchestra to tour around the world many times, and led the orchestra to perform in Hong Kong in 1978 and 1982.He also served as guest conductor of the London philharmonic orchestra from 1978 to 1980.After leaving the Cleveland orchestra, Mr. Maazel was invited to become general manager and artistic director of the Vienna state opera.This is the first American conductor to receive this high honor.Two years later, he left Vienna to return to the Pittsburgh symphony orchestra.He was appointed guest conductor and music consultant in 1986. He was only formally appointed as music director in 1988. He became music director of the New York Philharmonic in September 2002.As musical director, he conducted the orchestra in seven world premieredworks by the New York Philharmonic commission, including Pulitzer and grammy-winning John Adams's "about the cycle of the soul," Stephen hartke's "third symphony," and Melinda Wagner's "trombone concerto."He directed the orchestra in Brahms and Beethoven and in 2007 organized a symphony festival in memory of Tchaikovsky.The master toured extensively with the orchestra he selected, including eight in South America and 23 in Japan.He also gives at least 40 shows a year in Europe.He directed the music for the film versions of don Juan and Carmen, and he regularly premiered major works by famous composers (panderecki, berio, shetlin).He also won two ASCAP awards for his contributions to modern American music.In 2005, maazel also led the New York Philharmonic on a historic visit to Pyongyang, north Korea, to give a concert.
